Introduction to the Author - Angela O'Malley

VEILLED MEMORIES AUTHOR

Early Life and Childhood

I was born in Middlesex, the eldest of five children, and spent my formative years in Harrow, a suburb in Northwest London, during the 1970s. My earliest and happiest memories centre around sharing stories and books; listening to stories in that setting felt truly magical. My father wasn’t one for reading physical books, but he delighted in inventing his own tales. If the direction of the story didn’t appeal to me, I would argue with him until he changed the plot to suit my taste. My mother, on the other hand, came from a family of avid readers, and from a young age, I absorbed the classics of Charles Dickens and the Brontë sisters, alongside the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen.

Literary Influences and Teenage Years

As I selected my own books, I gravitated towards mysteries written by Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie, and Arthur Conan Doyle, and became engrossed in Catherine Cookson's historical sagas. My teenage years were turbulent due to my parents’ divorce, but books provided comfort and solace throughout this period, nurturing my empathy for others facing hardship. This lifelong refuge in literature inspired both my dedication to social care and my passion for storytelling, offering a unique perspective that continues to inform my professional and creative pursuits.

Professional Journey and Family Life

Across the years, I have lived and worked in Spain, have managed projects designed to empower older adults to live independently, later specialising in the development and delivery of professional training for those working in health and social care. My work as an instructional designer involves creating training programmes for professionals who support people with learning disabilities across the country. Thirteen years ago, I relocated to Thame, Oxfordshire, with my husband. I enjoy travelling, taking walks with our dog, reading, especially works by authors like Lisa Jewell, Ruth Ware, and Kate Morton
